Maher Arar was cleared by the Canadian government of being a suspected Islamic terrorist, but he is still on the U. S. security watch list.

Arar is a Canadian citizen who was born in Syria. He was arrested in 2002 by U. S. agents when he was on a stopover in New York, on his way home to Canada after a holiday. He then was deported to Syria where he reports that he was jailed and tortured before being released in 2003. In September of 2006 he was cleared by a judge who said that Arar was indeed tortured in Syria and that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police gave erroneous information to U. S. authorities. However, the U. S. claims to have information about Arar that is separate from whatever he was accused of the first time around. For more information, you can read the full story here.
