I've gotten comments that too many involved in the peace movement are spoiled rich kids with nothing better to do with their time. What a naive assumption!
A friend of mine who was politically active in the 1970's remarked to me that it is often the children of the privileged who get involved in social justice issues. I am not sure if there has ever been any sociological studies about the demographics of the peace movement, but though my own contact I have no doubt that there is a fair number of white, middleclass males. For some, their station in life has afforded them the time to be able to examine world issues and formulate opinions, and to implement them into action. For others, the reasons they got involved had to do with getting fed up with the shallowness of our material society and seeking a deeper and more meaningful connection with the world. But we can't paint and entire movement with one brush. The peace movement is made up of all social classes, genders, and cultures. What made you get involved in the peace movement?
