Urban Outfitters, a trendy clothing and accessory store, has pulled their line of keffiyahs from their shelves after being barraged with complaints.

The keffiyahs (also known as shemagh scarves, worn by Muslim men) were being marketed as "peace scarves" but many shoppers disagreed, statting that the keffiyah is a symbol of violence.

Some Muslims have also complained that Urban Outfitters was appropriating their culture. The scarves were being sold in a variety of fashionable colours, while traditionally they are only black and white, or white and red.

I visited my local Urban Outfitters this past week and was told that the scarves were pulled due to complaints. I do know a few people in the peace movement who wear one while marching; a traditional one though, not one purchased in a retail store.

What do you think? Can a keffiyah be used as a symbol of peace and understanding? Feel free to start a discussion below.
